How to take pictures of stars with phone

Posted on April 10, 2023April 10, 2023 By Ivo Lubina

Taking pictures of stars with a phone camera can be a bit challenging, but it is possible with the right technique and equipment. Here are some tips to help you capture great photos of the stars:

  1. Find a dark location: To capture clear pictures of stars, you need to find a location that is away from city lights and light pollution. The darker the location, the better.
  2. Use a tripod: A stable tripod is essential for taking clear photos of stars because any movement or shaking can ruin your shot. A smartphone tripod or mount will help you keep your phone steady.
  3. Use a manual camera app: Most smartphone cameras have an automatic mode that adjusts the settings based on the lighting conditions, but this can be a problem when shooting stars. Use a manual camera app that allows you to adjust the ISO, exposure, and focus manually.
  4. Set the focus to infinity: Set the focus to infinity manually so that the camera lens is focused on the stars. You can do this by tapping on the screen and adjusting the focus manually or using the manual focus feature in your camera app.
  5. Use a slow shutter speed: To capture the stars’ light, you need to use a slow shutter speed. This means that the shutter will be open for a longer time, allowing more light to enter the camera. Experiment with different shutter speeds until you find the right one for the conditions.
  6. Keep the ISO low: A high ISO setting can introduce noise or grain into your photos, so keep it low if possible. Start with an ISO of 800 or lower and adjust as needed.
  7. Take multiple shots: Taking multiple shots will increase your chances of capturing a great photo of the stars. Try different settings and angles to see what works best.

Remember, taking pictures of stars with a phone camera can be challenging, but with a little practice and patience, you can capture some stunning shots.
